Thank you for thinking of AWLMC and our cats when considering adoption. We have many cats and kittens to choose from and hope that one will steal your heart and become a part of your family and life. The AWLMC adoption program ensures that our cats and kittens are placed into responsible and loving forever homes. Cats can live up to and even beyond 20 years. When deciding to adopt a cat or kitten please keep this time commitment in mind. Pets are part of the family and they need to be considered when decisions are made that change your household. A yearly visit to the veterinarian for a general check-up and vaccinations is necessary to ensure your cat is and remains healthy. We hope the information provided here gives you an understanding about AWLMC and helps you make an informed decision on adopting.

The Adoption Process

What to Expect of AWLMC

AWLMC is a nearly cage free shelter. It is designed to feel like a home environment rather than an animal shelter. When you visit expect to be greeted at the door by a volunteer and at least one or two cats who roam freely about the common areas of the shelter. There are five group rooms where several cats may be living together. These rooms have chairs for you to sit in and visit with the cats. The cats have beds, trees in each window, and plenty of toys. Because the cats are not caged, you will be able to freely interact and play with them.

An adoptions counselor will introduce you to each cat as you visit the five cat rooms. You will hear a little about each cat and his or her personality. You can read 'kittiographies' to see which cat may fit your home and lifestyle. The counselors know our cats and want to learn about you and your family so we can help you find a cat or kitten who will be a great match. While in each room, you will be able to engage with each cat. Be prepared to play and snuggle with some of our felines!

We have cats of various ages, looks, and personalities. Some of our cats play with and do well living with other pets while others prefer to be the only cat in the home. Some of our cats need an adults only home, while others will thrive in a busy active household. We talk with you and take all of this into consideration when helping you look for a new furry family member.

Most of our adult cats are in our shelter in Olde Towne Gaithersburg. Some adult cats live in foster homes and come to the shelter just for an adoption event. All of our cats less than one year old are in foster homes. These kittens are in our shelter for some but not all adoption events. If you are interested in any of our kittens please email us at to find out what adoption event the kittens will be attending.

Because kittens do best with a playmate their own age, our kittens generally are adopted in pairs. However, each adoption is treated individually and occasionally exceptions are made. You can speak with an adoption counselor about your case and what would be best.

What AWLMC Expects of You

If you find a cat to adopt that is a good match and the cat agrees, then you will complete an adoption application. This application is completed in person. Our adoption counselor will review the application and ask you some questions. It is our policy that we speak to all individuals living in the household. The AWLMC counselor may ask you to contact the other adults so they can talk with them. It is also our policy to meet all of the children that live in the household. We may request home visits or to speak with your veterinarian prior to adoption. For adopters who rent, we must speak to your landlord or property manager to ensure pets are allowed. Once your application is approved, you will complete and sign an adoption contract. At this time you will be asked to provide proof of identification, such as a driver's license.

Cost to Adopt from AWLMC

The adoption fees are designed to offset the costs of care incurred by the AWLMC. All AWLMC animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to adoption. Generally the fee is $75.00. We offer special promotions and discounts throughout the year.
